You've gone back and forth on whether or not to buy your kid an iPhone, but you've finally decided to do it. What’s next? There is a lot to learn, from Safari to iMessage and the "Wild West" of the App Store, where kids can find everything from Candy Crush to Tinder. How can you keep them safe, out of trouble, and away from things that are too hard for them to handle?
The good news is that you can handle many of these issues with Apple's ID Time settings, which are right on your phone. You can block or limit access to apps, turn the phone off at certain times, and more with these parental controls, even though no tech-based solution can ever replace ongoing talk. We should have with our kids about the use of devices and media prudently, and Screen Time could be a good place to start talking about your kid's tech use and help you set limits that work for your family. We'll answer the most important questions parents have about managing their kids' iPhones are answered, and we'll show you how to do it step-by-step.
Setting up Screen Time is a good idea before giving the phone to someone else. You can always loosen the rules as your child learns to be responsible. You can set up Screen Time on your kid's device but lock the configurations with a passcode, or you can do it on your phone and manage the settings from there. If you choose the second option, you'll need to set up a family information exchange first, which means making your child an Apple ID. With an Apple ID, your child can get access to more content. If you are using Family Sharing, go to the section after this one.
When you want to change where you are on your iPhone, all you need is a VPN or virtual private network. Your iPhone's IP address is hidden by a VPN, which gives you a new one from one of its servers. Changing your IP address changes your phone's virtual location, so ISPs, Netflix, webpages, and apps won't be able to tell where you are. Here's how to set up a VPN on your iPhone and use it to change your location:
Get an app that works as a VPN. Verify our list of best VPN services for iPhones if you're unsure which one to download. Sign in and create an account. You may have to pay for a subscription first, but some VPNs are free or have free trials that you can use. When the app asks for permission to set up VPN settings, tap "Allow." In the VPN app, you can choose the country you want. For example, to change their Netflix territory, choose a country on the planet whose Netflix library you want to use. Click "Connect" to connect to your VPN and change where you are.
How to set up a kid-friendly iPhone or iPad can be understood by changing the region on your Apple ID. You can change where you are so you can download apps that aren't available in your country. But Apple suggests that you check the next Apple ID balances before moving your iPhone and Apple ID: Find out how much money is left on your Apple ID and spend it. If you still have a store credit, you can change where you are. Use up your current subscriptions and withdraw them, or use up the days left on your subscriptions before you change regions. Memberships, preorders, rentals, and so on: Wait for your subscriptions, preorders, movie rentals, season passes, and store credit refunds to finish.
Make sure you have a way to pay for things in your new country or area. Apps, music, movies, TV shows, and so on: All your apps, music, books, movies, and TV shows will need to be redownloaded. You might not be able to get some of them in your new area.
Most people find that computer programs are the easiest way to change where their GPS is. Several programs can change your GPS, like MobiAnyGo. There are always free trials of these paid programs if you want to try them out first.
